Blue Ocean Technologies: Subsea well intervention completed in 6,700 ft without riser
Blue Ocean Technologies has set multiple records in subsea well intervention by intervening in, and subsequently plugging and abandoning, a production gas well in 6,700 ft (2,042 m) of water and approximately 12,600 ft (3,840 m) downhole without a riser, according to the company. The intervention took place in Atwater Valley Block 426, approximately 130 nautical miles (240 km) south-southeast of Port Fourchon, La., in the Gulf of Mexico. Blue Ocean Technologies completed the well with its Interchangeable Riserless Intervention System (IRIS), using a dynamically positioned vessel as the work platform. This project marks the first time that wireline has successfully run in open water at 6,700 ft.
“We encountered multiple hurdles throughout the intervention, such as strong currents between 2.8 and 5.8 knots,” said Neil Crawford, President and Co-founder of Blue Ocean Technologies. “Our team partnered with the operator’s crew to overcome these obstacles and set new industry records.”
Blue Ocean Technologies set previous depth records in 2009 at 2,950 ft (899 m) and in 2012 at 4,300 ft (1,220 m), the company said. IRIS has completed multiple riserless (open water) wireline runs, pulling and resetting horizontal tree plugs and deploying a variety of intervention tools multiple times, including gauges, bailers, perforating guns, a camera and a logging tool.
