PEMEX makes its first discovery in deepwater Gulf of Mexico

PEMEX, Mexico’s national oil company, has made its first discovery of crude oil in deepwater Gulf of Mexico, which confirmed the existence of light crude oil deposits in the Perdido Fold Belt province.

The Trión 1 well, 177 km off the coast of Tamaulipas, has confirmed the existence of light crude oil deposits. The well was drilled at a total depth of 2,500 meters. PEMEX began drilling this well in June with the Bicentenario platform.

The total well thickness saturated is 320 meters, with porosity between 18% and 25% and permeability of up to 250 milidarcys, with an estimated flow of up to 10,000 barrels per day. The preliminary evaluation has given an average range of 3P reserves (proved, probable and possible) of 350 million barrels of oil equivalent. This well will continue to be drilled at greater depths to evaluate the Paleoceno Wilcox and Whooper projects.

The discovery supports the recovery of prospective resources in the Perdido Area project, which have been estimated at up to 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
