Drilling contractors reduce fatalities, push LTI and recordables rates lower in 2024 IADC ISP statistics
IADC Incident Statistics Program’s annual report shows global LTI rate fell by 7% to 0.13 while recordables rate declined by nearly 10% to 0.46

Drilling safety – in terms of frequency rates for lost-time incidents (LTIs) and recordable incidents, as well as the number of fatalities – generally showed positive trends in 2023, according to the most recent IADC Incident Statistics Program (ISP) report. The worldwide LTI rate fell slightly from 0.14 to 0.13, while the recordable rate fell from 0.51 to 0.46. A total of eight fatalities were reported in 2024, down from 10 fatalities in 2023.

Onshore contractors saw improvements in LTIs (falling from 0.20 to 0.17) and recordables (from 0.67 to 0.57). Offshore contractors suffered slight declines, however, with the LTI rate climbing from 0.07 to 0.09 and the recordables rate rising from 0.29 to 0.31.
During 2024, 76 drilling contractors representing 418.4 million manhours worked participated in the ISP, vs 71 contractors working 377.7 million manhours in 2023.
- Over the past year, IADC has continued to invest in ISP database upgrades, including:
- Real-time data analytics to compare participant company against industry totals;
- Interactive totals dashboards for incident detail;
- 7 pre-built reports for participants; and
- Anonymized industrywide reports for the public. DC
