“Big data” is taking on a new role in industry, where companies are combining the findings from geology and geophysics with new data collected from advanced technologies, such as sensors. Atanu Basu, CEO & President of Ayata, defined big data as things that cannot be illustrated in rows and columns – videos, images, sound and text – and he characterizes big data with three Vs: volume, velocity and variety.
