Perspective from aviation: Striking balance is critical to efficiency gains in automation
Much like the world of drilling, the aviation industry operates within complex environments and is supported by highly skilled workers entrusted with specific functions that leave little margin for error. While automated systems can help achieve the required levels of accuracy and preciseness, companies must strike the right balance between human input and machine automation for optimal efficiency gains, according to Luca Save, Safety & Human Factors R&D Expert for Deep Blue – an Italian consulting and research group. To explain how aviation companies have dealt with this challenge, Mr Save talked with DC Editorial Coordinator Alex Endress at the Drilling Automation Workshop, held in London on 16 March in conjunction with the 2015 SPE/IADC Drilling Conference.
