National Oilwell Varco launched the StringSense technology – an updated instrumented internal blowout preventer (IIBOP) – at the 2015 SPE/IADC Drilling Conference in London on 17 March. The IIBOP enables multi-variable measurement on the drillstring itself. “The key feature of this is that it actually has the ability to drop in and replace the existing IIBOP valve assembly that’s currently on the top drive,” Sean Cuff, NOV Product Line Manager, said. The technology was recently tested during drilling operations in South Texas, and results were released as part of SPE/IADC 173042, “A New Technique for Calculating Downhole Rotation Speed and Torque from Surface Measurements.” Watch the video with Mr Cuff to find out more about StringSense.
