IADC issues document establishing international geothermal classification system

The IADC Geothermal Committee published a new document establishing an international classification system for geothermal well construction. The document provides a context to distinguishing between different well types and defines the necessary equipment, standards, process and training for the wells’ safe and efficient construction and operation.

The document addresses what it calls a “broad and often inconsistent range of terminology, definitions and acronyms that can blend shallow non-drilling ground source heat pumps with deeper geothermal applications.”

The document is intended for “deep” geothermal wells, or wells generally deeper than 200-300 m that require multiple hole sections of casing sizes to reach the intended target. According to the document, this classification covers approximately 80% of geothermal concepts. Exceptions to this classification include offshore geothermal projects, which remain in the feasibility stage, and projects that involve the repurposing of existing wells for geothermal use, which represent a “significant outlier” in geothermal drilling.

The document will also serve as the foundation for a complexity calculator that will be designed to provide a “clear and accessible” visual representation of the complexities and challenges associated with geothermal wells. The calculator is still in development and does not have a scheduled release date as of 25 February.

In addition to the calculator, the document provides worked examples to illustrate the practical application of the classification system, demonstrating how it can be used to assess and compare different geothermal well projects.
