Connecting with the public: Industry must learn to tell its own story

Companies in the oil and gas industry have been working to improve the way it communicates and collaborates within the industry. However, it’s more important than ever that companies go beyond that and work to better communicate with the general public through the news media, Dave Scallan, Founder and President of Spoken Word Communication, said at IADC World Drilling 2015 in Rome on 18 June. When the industry declines to engage with the news media, Mr Scallan said, the media will simply be forced to turn to other sources who are more willing to talk – in effect letting other people tell our story. In this video, Mr Scallan, a former journalist, provides advice on how the industry can begin to better communicate with the mass media and the public and explains why this sort of communication is critical to the sustainability of the industry.
