2 7/8-in. coiled tubing reaches record TD

In early April, Global Tubing announced that STEP Energy Services had performed the deepest 2 7/8-in. coiled-tubing operation in North American history. The operation took place in November 2013 at 20,578-ft TD in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin on a multiwell, pad drilling site.

The coiled-tubing string had an overall length of 21,327 ft and weighed more than 130,000 lb. It used Global Tubing’s SMARTaper technology, which was incorporated to maximize horizontal reach while increasing tubing strength where required.

The SMARTaper coiled-tubing design gives operators a thicker wall at the bias weld while tapering to lighter wall in less crucial areas. Field tests proved that the design eliminates bias weld fatigue spikes and improved reach. This allows for increased life without unnecessary weight and enabled extended horizontal reach in the record operation.

Halliburton RezConnect saves 5 days on Latin American well

Halliburton has released the RezConnect well-testing system for wireless control of downhole drill stem test tools, measurement and analysis of well-test data in real time. The new well testing system provided a rig time savings of five days on a deepwater well in Latin America.

By acquiring real-time data acoustically, the duration of well test flow and pressure buildup periods were optimized and the need for acid stimulation confirmed. This allowed for improved well productivity and the ability to evaluate post-stimulation well performance.

60+ stages placed using NCS fracturing system, slickwater

NCS Energy Services has completed two horizontal Cardium wells by employing a combination of high-rate slickwater and the NCS Multistage Unlimited fracturing system. The company placed more than 60 frac stages in one well, with aggressive spacing of individual fracture stages. Treating rates of 49 bbl/min enabled placement of 40 frac stages in 24 hrs.

AGR drills 500 wells across 25 countries since 2000

AGR announced in March that it had drilled 500 wells, representing an average of one new drilling project started every 10 days, since 2000. In that time, the company has delivered drilling projects for 106 clients in 25 countries, spanning six continents.

AGR has drilled wells in environments including deepwater and ultra-deepwater, high-pressure, high-temperature, the Hoop area of the Barents Sea and a number of sensitive environments.

Baker Hughes AutoTrak Curve drills 10 million ft

BH-screen-capCommercially launched two years ago, the Baker Hughes AutoTrak Curve rotary steerable system has drilled 10 million ft in unconventional shale plays.

The system provides directional control, enabling operators to stay on plan or change targets on the fly for optimum wellbore placement, even in thin reservoirs. This allows operators to kick off from vertical and drill a high buildup rate curve and the lateral in fewer runs.

Dopeless technology completes Vaca Muerta well

Pluspetrol has used Tenaris’ Dopeless technology in a horizontal well in the Vaca Muerta field in the Argentine province of Neuquén. Pluspetrol drilled the PSO-1009h well to a TD of 11,811 ft, and the operation was completed without rejects or re-makeups.

The operator selected 7-in. and 5-in. casing with TenarisHydril Wedge 513 and Wedge 563 Dopeless premium connections. Tenaris provided specialists to assist with string design, pipe management and more.

Dopeless is a dry, multifunctional coating applied at the mill that eliminates conventional operations with thread compounds.

Technology reduces completion time by 46% in South Texas

Schlumberger’s BroadBand Sequence fracturing technique has reduced well completion time by up to 46% and the number of bridge plugs required by 68% in plug-and-perf operations in South Texas.

The technology also was applied to a well in South Texas for a refracturing operation, which doubled the production with a fourfold increase in flowing pressure.

The fracturing technique enables sequential stimulation of perforation clusters in wells drilled in unconventional reservoirs and sequentially isolates fractures to ensure every cluster in each zone is fractured, resulting in greater production and completion efficiency.
