Using rig as a well construction platform can eliminate wellsite inefficiencies
Drilling contractors’ primary focus has always been to deliver rigs equipped with the latest technologies and staffed with highly trained crews. While this is still a priority, contractors are increasingly also looking beyond the rig to the well itself. This has led contractors to take on additional services that would traditionally be performed by third parties. When third parties come to the well site to perform a service like directional drilling or casing running, they bring extra people and equipment, Chris Papouras, President of Nabors Drilling Solutions, said in an executive plenary session at the 2018 SPE/IADC Middle East Drilling Technology Conference in Abu Dhabi. In this video from the conference on 29 January, Mr Papouras explains how such inefficiencies can be overcome by using the rig as a platform for the entire well construction process. Further, he discusses the barriers that must be overcome for such a change to take place.
