Redesigned RSS improves reliability, saves operator 9 days

In a recent Latin American project, an operator was able to overcome challenges related to shock and vibrations by deploying a redesigned rotary steerable system (RSS). The PowerDrive Orbit RSS, which Schlumberger launched this week at the 2014 IADC/SPE Drilling Conference in Fort Worth, Texas, features a new pad design with metal-to-metal sealing. Gokhan Yarim, VP, Marketing & Technique, Drilling and Measurements for Schlumberger, describes the new features and how the RSS helped the operator to double the rate of penetration and save approximately nine days.
