MacArtney deploys custom version MUX on ROV

MacArtney Group has created a custom version of its EMO DOMINO-7 fiber optic multiplexer system (MUX) for installation on a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in Singapore.

The custom version of MUX includes upgrades to the subsea survey and camera interfaces of the ROV. These upgrades were needed to ensure that large amounts of data and video could be reliably transmitted from the ROV to shore. MacArtney said it has received positive feedback from the customer and end user about the custom system’s performance.

The requirements for reliable transmission of large amounts of data and video from ROVs, remotely operated towed vehicles (ROTVs), ocean observatories and instrumentation packages are constantly being sharpened. This is due to the fact that gathering high-quality data from the deep sea is an immense undertaking, which calls for ensuring that multiple sensor and equipment types work in perfect unison and that all data are efficiently transmitted to the surface for analysis, the company said in a 19 April press release.

The DOMINO-7 MUX is a compact fiber optic system with a wide range of MUX channel and power supply configurations. Offering three videos with 10 bit data channels, the DOMINO design also offers twice the number of industry standard multibeam ports, consisting of gigabit Ethernet communications, coupled with 48 VDC supply voltage, all provided within the same connection.

During the past two decades, MacArtney has developed and manufactured in-house EMO and NEXUS multiplexers and complete telemetry solutions for OEMs, system providers and operators all over the world. The EMO and NEXUS lines include several standard models spanning from advanced fiber optic and HD video capable systems, through electric coax cable compliant multiplexers to bespoke customer-specified or completely customized telemetry solutions. Beyond interfacing a vast variety of sensors mounted on board a given application, EMO and NEXUS multiplexers work to provide and sustain a safe and efficient fiber optic link between surface and seabed.
