The length of coiled-tubing strings manufactured has been increasing in order to keep pace with the longer laterals being drilled in today’s wells. However, adding to the length of a coiled-tubing string greatly increases the load the unit must carry. In some cases, these heavier loads can run afoul of permitting requirements. National Oilwell Varco (NOV) developed the Genesis platform to provide durable long-tubing strings on a unit that meets permit requirements. In this video from the 2018 SPE/ICoTA Coiled Tubing and Well Intervention Conference in The Woodlands, Texas, Norm Fossheim, Director of Engineering at NOV, explains the features of the new unit, including its ability to provide both hydraulic and electric power. He also discusses the future of the Genesis line and associated coiled-tubing units.
