Sneak Preview: Hercules & Maersk share stories of HSE innovation in March/April DC
“The environmental culture is a focus area here and now,” writes Maersk Drilling’s Malgorzata Krupa. “There is always room for improvement when it comes to environmental performance, and we are striving to reach an environmental culture that can match the highly developed safety culture.”
The article is based on a presentation scheduled for the 2009 IADC Environmental Conference & Exhibition, 12-13 May in Stavanger, Norway.
In a separate article, Hercules’ David Crochet details the company’s considerable strides to implement a meaningful HSE program in a company with severe growing pains.
In a hair over 4 years, Hercules grew from a private firm with five jackups and 22 liftboats to a public corporation boasting 73 offshore rigs and 64 liftboats, plus a workboat fleet.
“This growth has seen people and equipment coming from as many as 10 different companies and cultures,” Mr Crochet writes. “With the acquisition of Todco in July 2007, the company quadrupled in size to over 4,000 people! This presented the considerable challenge of growing one HSE or ‘safety’ culture from many different parts.”
In March 2007, Hercules began an ongoing effort to educate and train everyone in the company. Through its “Hero’s Training,” the company set out to:
• Understand purpose
• Streamline/simplify
• Create buy-in and belief
• Engage/enlighten
• Build visibility
• Own accountability
• Show leadership
• Create one culture from many.
Hercules adopted four primary HSE tools – job safety analysis, permits to work, “time-out” (a stop-work responsibility tool) and “hero” (a behavioral observation tool) – which it dubs “Power Tools”.
