Maurel & Prom makes gas discovery at Mnazi Bay in Tanzania

Maurel & Prom (M&P) confirmed a gas reservoir on the Mnazi Bay license in Tanzania with the Kasa-1X exploration well, which it drilled from the coast to a target 4.5 km offshore under 400 m of water. The first penetration made the discovery, and the well was immediately sidetracked with a horizontal section that intersected 588 m of reservoir. Drilling began in June.

M&P estimates the discovery at about 200 billion cu ft (bcf) of gas on a 100% basis, or 120 bcf net to the company, which operates the license with a 60% interest. Production is set to begin as early as November 2026, with expected potential of 50 million cu ft/d (mcf/d) on a 100% basis.

Kasa-1X follows the MB-5 and MS-2 development wells, drilled in the first half of 2026 and now on production. Mnazi Bay output has reached about 130 mcf/d, and the two wells lift the field’s production potential to nearly 200 mcf/d. M&P released the results on 22 October 2026.
