Baker Hughes’ AutoTrak Curve RSS drills 10 million ft in two years
Baker Hughes’ AutoTrak Curve rotary steerable system (RSS), launched two years ago at the IADC/SPE Drilling Conference, has drilled 10 million ft onshore North America since then. Alan Aitken, the company’s Director of Engineering & Technical Support for North America Drilling and Evaluation, discusses the technology and the significance of the milestone at the 2014 IADC/SPE Drilling Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. The system can achieve build rates of more than 15°/100 ft, and a gamma ray detector is integrated near the bit to allow for precise geosteering.
