DROPS organization announces North American chapter

The UK-based DROPS (Dropped Object Prevention Scheme) Organization has announced the formation of a North American Chapter. Founded in 1997, the group is focused on dropped object prevention throughout the oil and gas industry. Members of DROPS include more than 130 of the world’s leading operators, contractors, service companies and industry bodies working together with the ultimate goal of zero dropped objects in the workplace. This is achieved through educating workers and employers on the dangers of dropped objects, and providing recommendations on how to build an effective, integrated dropped objects prevention strategy.

“The US BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) recently reported that there were 219 fatalities caused by falling objects or equipment in 2011. That’s 5% of all workplace fatalities,” said Tom Votel, DROPS member and president/CEO of safety manufacturer Ergodyne. “We are proud to be a member of this aggressive and influential group to help achieve zero drops at a global scale.”

By expanding the organization to North America, DROPS hopes to fully engage North American industry players in the dropped object prevention initiative and to help shape and drive the DROPS campaign. Members meet at regular forums where progress is reviewed, focus areas are prioritized, new technologies/services are presented and best practices and lessons learned are shared in an open and collaborative environment. On a broader level, DROPS manages the exchange of information, knowledge, tools, and techniques across all regions.

“Dropped object prevention goes beyond tethering tools, ” said Nick Bourdoumis, DROPS Steering Committee chairman and Seadrill QHSE director for the Americas. “It is about identifying the causes behind the issue; finding effective solutions to prevent them; and educating and training workers and employers on how to implement and execute a proper safety program.”
