Ziegler: MPD can help to safely manage riser gas in deepwater wells

Riser gas events are not common, but they can occur suddenly and without warning, and they can have serious consequences. That’s why it’s critical to develop an action plan, Robert Ziegler, Global Director of Well Control Technology for Weatherford, said in a presentation at the 2016 SPE/IADC Managed Pressure Drilling and Underbalanced Operations Conference in Galveston, Texas. In this video from the conference on 12 April, Mr Ziegler explains how closing the riser at the mud line and treating a finite volume of gas in the riser is low-pressure work and can be done with ample safety margins using MPD equipment.
