Your involvement directly impacts the collective success of our industry — it all starts with us

From the Chairman
IADC has been a pivotal part of my career since the early days, and I’m excited and honored to serve as your Chairman this year. One of my goals is to maximize what IADC can be and how much benefit we can bring YOU when WE, the members, fully engage. IADC is a tremendous resource we all have access to, and this team has never been more eager to help its members.
Regardless of whether the market is up or down, connecting to your industry body will pay back tenfold the efforts you put in — not just personally, but for all our member companies, large and small.
Imagine having access to expert guidance on how to handle data ownership or emissions classification. Imagine having a robust training program for crews and supervisors at your fingertips. Imagine having representation in political circles you never knew you could benefit from. IADC provides all of these things and more, and it’s all right here waiting for you to draw upon.
For smaller companies, that can be like having extra staff or outside advice. For the big guys, it can be the collective knowledge that, as an industry, we are on the right track for a sustainable future and that our efforts cannot be devalued or marginalized. All we need to continue and improve this effort is a little time from you and your organization.
I promise that your relationship with this association will be mutually beneficial, and your participation matters. A benefit of engagement is the unparalleled networking opportunities. In my personal experience, the networking is truly invaluable, especially in new locations. When I moved with my family around the world, we had new suppliers and customers to navigate and a whole new life to set up, both professionally and personally. Meeting people at IADC events shortened our acclimation to new environments and helped us connect with colleagues and other families in the community.
Your participation in industry organizations also reflects positively on your company’s reputation. Being involved shows customers, employees and potential recruits that you’re actively shaping the direction of your industry. Your presence and contributions demonstrate both the company’s and your own commitment to being better as an industry, beyond pure self-interest.
Perhaps the most impactful benefit is playing a role in shaping the industry’s trajectory. Active participants help determine the topics we discuss at conferences, the work that committees prioritize and the overall strategic focus of the organization. This goes way beyond simply paying dues and consuming resources — you’re literally helping direct where the industry pays attention and ensuring our longevity and prosperity as a collective benefit to the world.
At Transocean, involvement in industry organizations is very intentional. We’ve assigned several employees to be engaged as leaders for industry relations. These folks help pull in expertise and involvement from all departments to work hand in hand with the awesome folks at IADC around the world.
We also lead by example. Senior leadership at Transocean actively serves on various committees and organizations. We look for opportunities to get involved. When you actively encourage your people to get involved, chances are they will, and they will thrive from that development opportunity.
Our philosophy is simple: If we’re going to benefit from industry bodies, we have to contribute to them. Contributing to the subject matter is arguably as important, if not more important, than financial sponsorship alone.
There are many ways to participate in IADC, including getting involved with one of the 16 committees, 16 regional chapters or numerous global conferences. While all IADC committees are open to volunteers on an ongoing basis, some are currently seeking support: Cybersecurity, HSET, Jackup, Sustainability and Well Control. If this is your area of expertise, come help us out and see what could happen for you in the process.
If you’ve been thinking about getting more involved, I encourage you to get the full benefit of your membership. This is a free resource that simply requires a little time and effort. If your company is not a member, sign up and discover what IADC and this community can do for your business. Be part of something bigger that benefits us all.
As an industry, we have been here for over a century; as a guiding body, IADC has been providing resources for more than 85 years. In that time, we have tirelessly provided invaluable resources to the world… and remember, it all starts with us, the drillers.
In short, sign up for something – anything that starts your personal IADC journey. I promise you will not regret it; you will be amazed with the people you meet, the depth of knowledge this industry has at its fingertips and the strength we have as a team of drillers looking to make the best of every situation in which we find ourselves.
