Natural gas drilling, fracturing moves industry toward self-sustainability

In the next three to five years, 50% to 75% of frac pumps in North America will be powered by natural gas, David Gallagher, VP of production enhancement for Baker Hughes, said. “Today, we’re in single-digit numbers,” he said. At the 2013 ATCE in New Orleans, La., last week, Baker Hughes displayed its Rhino Bifuel truck, which can achieve a 70/30 natural gas-to-diesel blend in its fracturing operations.
