Philippines discovers gas and condensate offshore Malampaya
The Philippines discovered a substantial natural gas and condensate reservoir at the Malampaya East-1 (MAE-1) prospect located about 5 km east of the existing Malampaya gas field in the West Philippine Sea, marking the country’s first major gas discovery in more than 10 years.
Initial drilling and well testing at MAE-1 showed a flow rate of 60 million cu ft per day, indicating strong productivity. The reservoir is estimated to contain approximately 98 billion cubic ft of gas in place, with associated condensate present in the reservoir.
The MAE-1 discovery lies within Service Contract 38 offshore Palawan and was drilled as part of an expanded exploration and appraisal program under the Malampaya Phase 4 plan. The campaign includes additional wells such as Camago-3 and Bagong Pag-asa-1, which are expected to provide further insight into the broader hydrocarbon potential of the area.
Operatorship of Service Contract 38 is led by Prime Energy with partners including UC38, PNOC and Prime Oil and Gas. Filipino engineers played a leading role in the drilling operations, which were completed without reported accidents or environmental incidents.
