Halliburton to drill Petrobras CCS pilot wells in Brazil
Petrobras signed a contract with Halliburton for the drilling and completion of four onshore wells at the Barra do Furado Station in Quissamã, Rio de Janeiro state, for the São Tomé CCS Pilot Project. The well program comprises one vertical injection well and three directional monitoring wells.
Drilling, completion and associated infrastructure are set to be finished by 2028. Petrobras will begin the operational phase in 2029, followed by three years of CO₂ injection and three years of reservoir monitoring. The pilot aims to capture up to 100,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year and is designed to test capture, pipeline transport and saline-reservoir storage technologies. Petrobras describes the project as the first in Latin America to combine CO₂ transport by pipeline with storage in a saline reservoir.
