UK, Scottish government ministers to speak at Offshore Europe

Several senior representatives of the UK and Scottish governments are scheduled to address the audience at SPE Offshore Europe 2013, 3-6 September in Aberdeen. They include Lord Green, the UK minister for trade and investment; the Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP, UK energy minister; Jan Panek from the European Commission; and Fergus Ewing MSP, the minister for energy, enterprise and tourism in Scotland. “It is very good to see senior government leaders demonstrating their support for the industry by attending and speaking at this event,” Malcolm Webb, chairman of this year’s conference and CEO of Oil & Gas UK, said. “The UK is a recognized center of excellence in the global oil and gas industry, with its central hub located in and around the city of Aberdeen. Hence, it is fitting, not only that this major conference and exhibition is based here, but also that it has the support and involvement of so many leading figures from industry and government.”

On 2 September, Scotland’s first minister, the Rt Hon Alex Salmond MSP, will provide the keynote address to industry and civic leaders at a formal dinner in the Aberdeen City’s Town House.

On 3 September, a senior UK government minister is expected to give the opening address to the conference plenary. Later that day, Lord Green will outline the strength of British exports of oilfield goods and services.

The Rt Hon Michael Fallon and Mr Panek will participate in a conference session on industry progress since Macondo on 4 September. Mr Ewing will speak at a session on women in the industry, to be attended by the Scottish Princess Royal, and at another special session on 6 September dedicated to skills and recruitment issues facing the industry.

On 5 September, Sajid Javid MP, the economic secretary to the Treasury, will speak in a keynote session on offshore decommissioning, and the Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable MP, secretary of state for business, innovation and skills, will address the audience on how collaboration on new technology can help to realize the North Sea’s full potential.

IADC is an endorsing organization for the conference and will be exhibiting at Stand 3C180. For more information about the conference, click here.
