IADC ART Committee workshop to look at automation impact on safety

The industry is gearing up for several events in the coming months that will engage the drilling industry to explore the state of the art in rig technology, downhole operations and integrating the two seamlessly with minimal human intervention. In this exclusive video with Thomas Geehan, Chairman of the IADC Future Technology Subcommittee, he provides an update on how the IADC Advanced Rig Technology (ART) Committee is working with SPE Drilling Systems Automation Technical Section (DSATS) to create a roadmap which would enable industry to identify what technology is missing that would help automation to be implemented more with in the industry.

The IADC ART Future Technology Workshop, to be held in Houston on 20 May, will focus on drilling rig automation and its effect on safety. “The objective is to get a discussion going with in the industry on the complexity of automation on the rig site. How do we know when we program a piece of equipment on the drill floor, it’s going to do what we want it to do. There could be millions of lines of code that controls that piece of equipment,”  said Mr Geehan, who also serves as Senior Advisor Science and Technology for M-I SWACO, a Schlumberger company. In addition, two IADC Drilling Systems Automation Roadmap Workshops have been planned. The first will be held on 17 June in Vienna, in conjunction with IADC World Drilling. The second will take place on 15 September in Galveston, Texas. Each half-day event will communicate the work produced by the DSA Roadmap Cross Industry Initiative and gain input from participants while sharing the understanding of the reasoning behind the roadmap.
