Nominations being accepted for IADC award to recognize field-based individuals
IADC believes in the importance of continually improving performance for the drilling industry. In support of that mission, IADC is launching the Chairman’s Anniversary Award to recognize field-based individuals who have directly impacted improved performance for their company, either through a project or personal effort. The award will be given every five years as part of IADC’s anniversary celebrations.
Award winners must demonstrate how their innovative project directly improved performance in the field in one of the following ways:
•Eliminating injuries;
•Enhancing process safety;
•Reducing NPT;
•Improving equipment reliability; or
•Increasing efficiency.
Submissions will be judged based on the above criteria by a group of IADC staff and industry veterans.
This year’s award coincides with IADC’s 75th anniversary and will be presented by IADC Chairman Ed Jacob during the IADC Annual General Meeting in November.
Submissions are being accepted through 31 May. Judging will begin on 1 June, and the winner will be contacted in August.

IADC issues new edition of Deepwater Well Control Guidelines
The second edition of the IADC Deepwater Well Control Guidelines became available in print and electronic formats in February. This edition includes new content on operational risk management, sometimes called process safety, with new and refreshed content on well integrity, well planning, rig operations, equipment, procedures, training and drills, and emergency response.
The year-long project to revise the guidelines was led by Louis Romo, BP, Chairman of the Deepwater Well Control Guidelines Task Force, and Moe Plaisance, Diamond Offshore Drilling (retired), Executive Advisor, with support from nearly 100 industry experts.
The aim of the guidelines is to facilitate safe and efficient deepwater drilling operations.
This book provides guidance for maintaining primary well control, applying secondary well control methods and responding to an emergency in a blowout. Each chapter is intended to facilitate the rig team’s primary task of maintaining and optimizing control of the well. Six chapters tackle these topics:
• Operational risk management and well integrity (James Hebert, Diamond Offshore Drilling, Chairman): barrier installation and maintenance for the life of the well;
•Well planning and rig operations (Brian Tarr, Shell, Chairman): relevance of well planning and well design to well control;
•Equipment (Peter Bennett, Pacific Drilling, Chairman): typical well control equipment used on floating drilling rigs;
•Procedures (Earl Robinson, Murphy Oil Corp, Chairman): kick prevention, detection and mitigation to maintain/regain control;
•Training and drills (Benny Mason, Rig QA International, Chairman): planning, conducting and continuously improving deepwater well control training and drills.
• Emergency response (John Garner, Boots and Coots, Chairman): activities and resources to manage a well control emergency.
