Baúna SPS-92 well runs on two phases as Karoon plans cable replacement

Karoon Energy confirmed a fault in one of three electrical phases in the newly installed power cable for the electrical submersible pump (ESP) in the SPS-92 well at the Baúna Project offshore Brazil. The company noted a fault on the well’s monitoring system on 21 September 2026 and carried out a controlled shutdown on 22 September to preserve pump integrity. The pump is now operating on two phases in a conservative manner. The ESP and cable system had been in operation for less than three months.

Karoon believes a rig-based well intervention will be required to replace the faulty cabling and restore full operability. The company holds an existing option over a suitable drilling rig and has begun intervention planning, including securing permits, equipment and services. Timing depends on permit approvals and services. About 3,500 barrels of oil per day (bopd) will be deferred until the cable system is replaced, and the deferral is not expected to affect Baúna reserves.
