MPD integration into rig operating system reduces drilling contractor reliance on OEMs

By integrating automated managed pressure drilling (MPD) controls into its SmartROS rig operating system, Nabors is allowing drilling contractors to take greater ownership of MPD performance, rather than relying solely on OEMs. In this interview with DC from the 2026 IADC/SPE Managed Pressure Drilling and Underbalanced Operations (MPD/UBO) Conference in London on 16 September, Clarke Brockman, Engineering Manager at Nabors, explained how two-way communication between the MPD system and the rig operating system ensures coordinated decision making so that pressure is never inadvertently applied or removed from the well. Mr Brockman also detailed the automated sequencing involved in transitioning between drilling and connections, including verification that the proper surface backpressure is maintained.
