TotalEnergies plans 3-well Mopane appraisal campaign in Namibia

TotalEnergies completed its entry as operator of Namibia’s PEL83 license, home to the giant Mopane discovery, and said it will begin an appraisal campaign of three wells at the discovery as early as H2 2026. The company is targeting FID on the project in 2028.

The completed transaction saw TotalEnergies acquire a 40% operated interest in PEL83 from Galp, while Galp acquired a 10% interest in the PEL56 license, which holds the Venus discovery, and a 9.39% interest in PEL91 from TotalEnergies. TotalEnergies now holds the 40% operated interest in PEL83 alongside Galp (40%), Namcor (10%) and Custos (10%).

The transaction makes TotalEnergies operator of Namibia’s two largest oil discoveries. The company holds a 35.25% operated interest in PEL56 alongside QatarEnergy, Galp, Namcor and Impact, and a 33.09% operated interest in PEL91 alongside QatarEnergy, Namcor, Impact and Galp, strengthening its position in the Orange Basin.
