West Gemini completes Katambi-2 appraisal well offshore Angola
Sonangol and Angola’s National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels completed drilling and testing of the Katambi-2 appraisal well in Block 24 of the Benguela Basin. The Seadrill-operated drillship West Gemini, contracted through the Sonadrill joint venture, drilled the well 1.3 km from the original Katambi-1 well, which BP drilled in 2014 and 2015 before relinquishing its stake after judging the discovery commercially unviable.
Katambi-2 crossed two productive intervals totaling about 331 m of thickness, with average porosity between 9% and 12% and permeability higher than the original well. Initial testing recorded a stabilized flow rate of 41 million cu ft per day of gas and 1,160 bbl per day of condensate, with no water or hydrogen sulfide present.
ANPG described it as the first complete drill stem test conducted on a non-associated gas reservoir in Angola, with preliminary results indicating the well could produce more than 100 million cu ft per day of gas.
Sonangol plans to drill an additional appraisal well as part of the Katambi project before finalizing a development plan for Block 24.
