Noted oilfield analyst Matt Simmons dies suddenly

Noted oilfield analyst and investment banker Matthew R Simmons, founder and former chairman of Simmons & Company International, died suddenly on Sunday, 8 August, of an apparent heart attack, his executive assistant announced in a news release. Mr Simmons was 67 years old.

Mr Simmons was a frequent speaker at IADC conferences over the years.

He was also a proponent of “peak oil”, and believed that the world’s production would soon begin diminishing.

Mr Simmons founded the Ocean Energy Research Institute in Rockland, Maine. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the institute.

Mr Simmons is survived by his wife Ellen and their five daughters.
