Nuclear reactors could serve as a viable option to help decarbonize marine vessels, including offshore rigs, in the next 15 years, according to Lloyd’s Register. Three potential reactor types to look for are micro-reactors, nuclear heat pipes used as a passive heat transfer device; molten salt reactors, which use uranium dissolved in a molten fluoride salt liquid mixture to generate heat; and pressurized water reactors, which use uranium as a fuel to generate heat.
