Scorpion’s Offshore Courageous named Shell’s Jackup Rig of the Year
Scorpion Offshore announced that its Offshore Courageous rig has been named Shell International E&P‘s Jackup Rig of the Year. The Offshore Courageous was the company’s first jackup, and it has been working since mid-2007 for various clients. Since January 2009, the rig has been drilling offshore Malaysia for a subsidiary of Shell under a three-year term contract.
Martin Baltus, Shell’s head of well delivery in Malaysia and the Philippines, commented: “The Scorpion Offshore Courageous is a well-deserved winner of the Shell Jackup Rig of the Year Award, and it is quite unique that a rig wins this award in its first year of operation. Scorpion Offshore is a relatively small drilling contractor, and Scorpion management state that they strive for operational and HSE excellence. The performance of the Courageous is living proof of their philosophy.
“Scorpion Offshore Courageous started operations for Shell Malaysia in the beginning of 2009 and straight away performed at a higher level than is customary for rigs starting up. From that higher plateau, the Courageous team managed to achieve continuous improvement. Their performance is another example to show that HSE and operational performance go hand in hand. The rig is now approaching 300 days without recordable injuries while drilling and completing wells on time and well within budget. For us at Shell, safety is a deeply held value and takes priority. We relentlessly pursue ‘Goal Zero,’ which means no harm to people and no significant incidents.”
Jon Cole, Scorpion CEO, commented: “We are extremely gratified to have received this recognition from Shell, one of the world’s leaders in offshore operations and safety. The award is a testament to Scorpion’s efforts to deliver superior operational and safety performance through the application of experienced personnel, modern equipment and state-of-the-art operating and safety procedures.
“The personnel onboard the Offshore Courageous, as supported by our shore-based operations and safety staff, are to be commended for their accomplishment. All of us at Scorpion would like to thank Shell for providing this opportunity and presenting this honor.”

I was a driller on the off shore courageous for one and a half years and i still keep up with the company and my rig. I ts great to hear about shell giving it rig of the yewr but i know thats not possible with the crews that were on that rig. My self and about 9 other people sat in a class in houston and named every rig in the fleet and it is truly the best people and company i have every had the privlage to work for and i as well as shell are very proub of the people on the courageous. I left the courageous to come back to the states to start a family but would pack up and leave tomorow and go back if had the chance. when you have an awesome rig with awesome people running , well it just goes hand and hand.
