Houston Community College begins global training program

Houston Community College (HCC) has started its program to train the next generation of entry-level roustabout. The first four classes to kick off the Global Oil and Gas Drilling Training program that will change the way crews are recruited, trained and developed will wrap up at the end of March and in April 2014. Upon completion of the classes, HCC will host two student job-recruiting fairs.

The 106 Drilling Introduction students will meet with prospective employers, which include Diamond Offshore Drilling, Maersk Drilling and Atwood Oceanics. Students who have completed all coursework will be able to show IADC Rig Pass certification, standardized work aptitude WorkKeys and Career Readiness certification, as well as driving records, criminal background checks and medical readiness certification.

Drilling industry representatives are working with HCC education experts to create a program that produces better-trained candidates for the drilling industry of the future. HCC’s primary curriculum partner is PetroEd, which is an eLearning provider for the oil and natural gas industry. Through SkillGRID students have access to online oil and natural gas curriculum and Rig Pass certifications provided by PetroEd. This allows students an opportunity to build a strong foundation before moving on to advanced hands-on training.

HCC’s Drilling Introduction is an eight-week course that introduces students to various aspects of the petroleum industry, including equipment, systems, instrumentation, operations and various scientific principles. The course addresses a variety of petroleum technologies with emphasis on exploration, drilling, production, transportation, marketing, and chemical processing industries. Students will be able to identify the concepts of exploration, production, refining, marketing and transportation.

Coming Fall 2014, the next phase of training, to be developed with drilling industry experts, will be Roustabout I and II courses. The hands-on classes will be held on Rig One, a safety and skills training facility that will be located at HCC’s Northeast College.
