Jarvie-1 rig to drill 1,000-m horizontal section at Kavango West
ReconAfrica flowed natural gas and potential liquids to surface from the Huttenberg formation at the Kavango West 1X (KW1X) discovery well in northeast Namibia, completing vertical production testing at the site.
The uppermost Huttenberg zone flowed hydrocarbons to surface immediately upon perforation, ahead of any acid stimulation, following an earlier flow from the Upper Elandshoek zone. Flow rates were not measured because of equipment limitations, which the company has addressed by procuring additional equipment and changing its surface operations service provider. Production samples have been sent to US laboratories for compositional analysis, with results expected in the coming weeks.
ReconAfrica has prioritized the Huttenberg formation, which contains 75 m of pay based on original well log analysis, for an open-hole horizontal production test. The Jarvie-1 rig, which remains on location, is expected to drill up to 1,000 m of horizontal section through the formation, completed open hole without casing or cement to maximize flow from natural fractures. ReconAfrica holds the project alongside partners BW Energy (20%) and the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (10%).
