The Ghana Drillers Charity began under a quarterly EHS plan devised by Tullow Oil to improve safety on its contracted rigs in Ghana. It allowed individual employees to donate cash bonuses earned under the EHS plan to benefit a primary school in a small fishing village in far west Ghana called Ahobre. After initial donations were made covering basic needs such as exercise books, pens and pencils for the students, the charity stepped up its work and decided to build a new school complex. After breaking ground on 27 January in 2016, the complex – which includes six classrooms in two blocks, three outdoor teaching areas, two playgrounds, two bathroom facilities and one kitchen – was handed over to the school on 25 January 2017.
