The oil and gas industry is facing significant challenges in recruiting the next generation of talent to move the industry forward. The IADC Drilling Engineers Committee (DEC) dedicated its Q3 Technology Forum, held on 21 September, to addressing this challenge, with participants from operators, drilling contractors, service providers and academia. By working in breakout groups during the event, participants explored the specific actions that the industry needs to take around things like technology development, collaboration and industry branding. In this video interview with DC, Blaine Dow of Schlumberger, a member of the DEC Board and co-organizer for the event, spoke about both the opportunities and risks, as well as the DEC’s plans to draft a manifesto outlining the steps that stakeholders should take in the coming years. |

While managed pressure drilling (MPD) systems can be useful in deepwater projects, operators often still only use them as insurance when drilling difficult wells. In fact, the industry is still figuring out the value of adopting MPD on a larger scale, said André Alonso Fernandes, Drilling Engineer at Petrobras. In this interview with DC from the 2022 SPE/IADC Managed Pressure Drilling and Underbalanced Operations Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Mr Fernandes discusses the results from various simulations Petrobras performed to determine the optimal use of MPD on a drilling campaign, as well as the practices and procedures that can help expand the use of MPD. |

Precision Drilling CTO: Digital mindset can help drilling contractors reach ‘Drilling 4.0’ |
While the drilling industry has seen significant increases in footage drilled per rig over the years, it may have to look to other industries for inspiration that will bring about the next step change in performance. The manufacturing sector, for example, has done a great job of implementing “Industry 4.0,” or the digital convergence between industry, businesses and processes through cyber-physical systems such as AI. This has helped manufacturers realize new efficiencies and performance improvements in their operations, according to Shuja Goraya, CTO of Precision Drilling, and he believes the implementation of a “Drilling 4.0” can help drilling contractors see similar improvements... |

New study: US LNG to meet Europe’s energy needs in short and long term |
As global natural gas markets continue to tighten and Europe braces for a challenging winter, the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) released a new analysis of Europe’s natural gas market and highlighted the immense potential of US liquefied natural gas (LNG) to help Europe strengthen its energy security. The study, conducted by Rystad Energy, found that while the short-term outlook is challenging, new long-term supplies from abundant and affordable resources could fully replace Russian natural gas and rebalance the European market... |
