Technology in the drilling industry: Holy Grail or Oxymoron?

Mike Killalea interviews National Oilwell Varco's David Reid and Frank Springett about confronting technological challenges in the industry.

In an interview with National Oilwell Varco’s David Reid, vice president of business and technology and Frank Springett, vice president of engineering, IADC group vice president/publisher Mike Killalea discusses the ways in which IADC Advanced Rig Technology Committee (ART) is confronting the challenges of new technology. “It’s quite an effective group in that we get a lot of people, a lot of vendors, operators, as well as drilling contractors together and we talk about what are the issues and how do we get over the barriers and how do we understand where we want to go,” said Mr Reid, who is also the chairman of ART. The ART committee has also created the IADC Technology Value Guide to help operators assess new pieces of technology and equipment for rigs. Click below to watch the video.

  1. Great interview Mike!
I’m interested to hear about the ART committee. I was also interested to hear Mr. Springett’s comment re: surge/swab pressure studies and adapting downhole technologies to rigs. What I didn’t hear was any discussion of potential impact of coiled tubing drilling rig advances/technologies; e.g. increasing market share impact on technology/operations, etc. I’m not pushing CTD, but wanted to share the following with you as a data point in this regard for possible consideration by ART:
“Xtreme Coil recently committed the sixteenth rig in the fleet, an XTC 200DT, to drill under contract in western Nevada, our first project in that state. The rig is expected to deploy in February to drill a vertical test well with coil to a depth of approximately 7,000 feet for Sierra Geothermal Power Corp. (www.sierrageopower.com), a renewable energy company commencing operations on this deep geothermal pilot project. This is the first time coiled tubing will be used in a geothermal drilling application.”
Thanks Mike; and, again, congratulations on a job well done! I think a lot of folks will benefit from this sort of web broadcast.
    Best Wishes,
    Roy
